Online students, especially those who prefer face-to-face classes, feel disconnected from the professor without regular contact initiated by the professor. The challenge is to communicate regularly and effectively with information that increases their sense of being connected and enhances their understanding of the content.

I chose Canva as a tool to provide multi-media infographics highlight key information for each module. The attached sample is for Module 1 of a course I am currently teaching. Because my current communication style is text based and to “start small” as I learned how to use Canva, my first infographic is text based. For subsequent modules, I’ll add different media e.g. graphics, video, gifs, etc. — selected to enhance the specific information being highlighted.

Many of my current students seem to prefer asynchronous communications – recorded classes, announcements, email, etc. I suspect this is because of competing priorities (family, jobs, other courses). And without the networking and sharing that occurs before, during and after face-to-face classes, the content can be overwhelming. I hope the infographics will help provide focus for the content.
