As a Co-operative Education Consultant, I often find students are not as engaged in their co-op prep classes as I’d like.  The classes take place early in their first semester when students are not yet focussed on their work terms.  There is a lot happening, they are still becoming adjusted to being in full time post-secondary education and frequently prioritize work in core subjects. In most cases, students attending a post-secondary institution- especially a College are there because their ultimate goal is employment (to either launch a career or upgrade skills for employment advancement).

So, WIIFM?

Co-op Courses will provide a foundation for effective employment search not just for purposes of finding a work term, but throughout your career. If the bottom-line reason is to attain employment, then it only makes sense to focus on that which is going to help you reach your goal!

  • Participation in, and successful completion of these classes will help to reinforce your confidence in yourself in a number of ways:
    • You’ll pass a course ( earlier than your full semester courses) and so will be able to derive a sense of satisfaction from having “one under your belt”
    • You will learn how to articulate the skills and abilities that you already have, as well as those you will build throughout your academic journey. Knowing who you are and what you are capable of can help develop self-esteem.
    • Understanding the hiring process will also help to take away the fear of the unknown
    • You’ll have an opportunity to practice your employability skills so that you are comfortable with the job search and interview process – You will gain an thorough understanding not only of what to expect in the hiring process, but also learn about eligibility to undertake a work term, requirements for an eligible work term so that you can earn the credit(s) ,  and about documentation or other paperwork you will be required to complete.
  • Attending classes provides you an opportunity to ask all of your questions so that you thoroughly understand where you can go, what you are permitted to “do” and what employers may expect of you. Also what you can expect of your co-op consultant and the resources available to help you with your job search
  • Using all of the information and insights you’ll gain through attending, you will know what to expect, what is expected of you and how you can be successful both in finding a work term, and on the job. This will help you prioritize and manage your time.
  • Knowing and understanding upfront what you will need to do is especially important for International students who may need to apply for Work Permits or students in programs which may require security clearances or have immunization requirements.  Early  attention to details can help you to  avoid unforeseen challenges will help avoid last minute stress
