The project I selected was the labs used for CHEM 1008 and CHEM 1009 in the Pre-health Sciences program at Georgian college. In the fall of 2021, in-person labs were adapted to virtual labs that students could complete at home and submit online.

  • Michele – Program Coordinator – Pre-health Sciences
  • Heather – Academic Program Technologist – Health & Wellness
  • Dave – Professor – Pre-health Sciences
  • Kim – Professor – Pre-health Sciences
  • Diana (me) – Instructor – Pre-health Sciences

Michele, Heather and Dave all have doctorates in various sciences. Kim has her M.Ed. I have a master’s in environmental studies. All have more teaching experience than I do and are full-time employees at Georgian. I value their expertise and experience and have often contacted them individually for teaching advice. Heather, Dave, Kim and I have all taught labs in these courses and so are familiar with the range of understanding demonstrated by pre-health students and previous expectations.

Modes of communication used were WebEx and email. The initial meeting was WebEx and subsequent exchanges were via email. This worked well given that we were working under COVID restrictions and were connecting from diverse locations.

In this situation, email exchanges were effective for editing the lab outlines for wording, lab instructions and marking schemes. The initial WebEx was a good way to launch the process given that we could not meet physically. We have used this approach to revise previous labs and it seems to work well. Meeting in person would be more fun and might offer opportunities to bounce ideas around in the moment, but revising/updating the labs also involves careful thoughtful reading which I feel the email exchanges allowed for.
