The first one is an overview of the course. It records the topics to be discussed in class and the sequencing of events. The main idea that I hope students will take away is that some elements of communication are used again and again. I plan to include an animated version of this in my opening lesson.

The second graphic organizer is a draft version of the syllabus, where students will be able to click on the hyperlinked box and go directly to a document with the required information. I hope that it will allow students to find the information they need quicker than thumbing through a 12-page syllabus. And, I think it engages students more than a document that looks like a small textbook. I want them to use the information in the syllabus — it’s there to help them and to set up clear expectations.
