My metaphor is that I am a cruise ship navigator.

I am the person who drives the direction of the ship and ensures a safe environment (safe learning environment). I ensure the basic are provided such as food water and shelter (the course outline, the learning environment, and the ability to evaluate, an appropriate text book and the content).

Sometimes I provide the opportunity to have you do some self guided discovery while on this cruise with pamphlets for areas to explore or tour at the port of call (links to content that will provide further details the person can explore on their own, eg best practice guidelines or community resource links)  of areas you may wish to further explore on your own.

Sometimes I have provided specific activities or excursions that I have vetted well and know what you will see and who you will interact with on the tour. (guest speakers, lectures specific links to with activities to use specific resources).

My goal is to provide a quality experience, and be sensitive to the needs of the person. On our ship I can direct you to other resources to support you when needed eg. An infirmary and gift shops (as a faculty I can connect you to our health office, student success, bring in student engagement speakers..)
