Curator Module: Activity 1 – Group Work

This image captures a brainstorming session of a group of college students, actively engaged in discussion and using various tools – a whiteboard, laptops, sticky notes – you can feel the room abuzz with ideas. I used Unsplash to locate the image and this was the first photo that appeared after I typed in group work for the search; the photographer’s name is Jason Goodman and there is some diversity represented. This image has many potential uses in an educational environment but I searched for group work as I was looking for an image to capture just that, as the assessment is one in which students have to work in person and virtually on a group assignment. I believe that it is important to show that group work is an active process of sharing and collaboration and while this can happen virtually as well, the visual representation of students actively engaged in discussion illustrates that this type of activity is interactive and one that involves communication and a commitment to an exchange of ideas, regardless of the learning format.
I have used Unsplash on many occasions to locate excellent images. They have quite a storehouse from which to choose and I always make sure to credit the photographer or artist that shares through this platform although this is optional. It is easy to navigate however I find the recent inclusion of paid photos somewhat intrusive. They are very clear about how one is permitted to use the images and the license can be linked to from the main page:

- All photos can be downloaded and used for free
- Commercial and non-commercial purposes
- No permission needed(though attribution is appreciated!)
What is not permitted
- Photos cannot be sold without significant modification.
- Compiling photos from Unsplash to replicate a similar or competing service.
