The group I’m working through Empowered Educator with used this activity as an opportunity to discuss our ‘blindspots’ (driving pun!) in our teaching. In my communications courses, one of my expert blindspots is grammar. Driving the car would be writing well-structured and crafted essays, however, that doesn’t come naturally to everyone. I often skip teaching or reviewing grammar (because I don’t enjoy it and I assume it’s been taught). What I have been finding more and more is that students can’t identify or properly use grammar and punctuation in their writing. It’s my job to go back to the basics, and to teach the parallel parking of grammar which is obviously the semi-colon!
