The program I teach is Radiation Therapy to treat cancer patients.  In this profession, Radiation Therapist use very sophisticated machinery to delivery radiation to the patient to treat their cancer diagnosis.  Not only do therapist setup the patient and delivery the radiation; because they see the patient for 4-7 weeks (5 days a week), they form therapeutic relationships with the patient.  They console the patient on radiation therapy specific side effects and make psychosocial referrals.  They have to be active listeners and communicate with empathy. In the profession of Radiation Therapy, not only do you have to have the technical skills to operate the Linear Accelerator, you have to have the soft skills in delivering patient care.  The students have to have a lot of foundational knowledge in courses like anatomy / physiology / relational anatomy / radiation physics / patient care / methodology and treatment planning in order to be successful in this professional.  Each course builds on one another and the students need to retain the information from previous courses to be successful in the next course.  I try to get my students to view the model route, or courses in the program from a holistic approach to understand that each course builds on their pathway to success.
