I guess my metaphor for how I approach teaching is that of a guide with a light. I can guide students and shine a light on the information and resources to help them get to their destination, but ultimately it’s up to them how they approach actually experiencing (learning) whatever I’ve led them to. I think of how people choose to experience something awe inspiring in nature – do they soak it all in and give themselves the time that they need? Do they read all the informational signs? Do they view it through the lens of their camera instead of their own eyes? Or do they spend a few minutes just for social media (i.e. do they put in the bare minimum just to “get the credit”). Of course, there are strategies I can implement along the way to keep them engaged.
