I have been teaching music for 17 years. All music has to be broken down into smaller elements in order to understand it. No one is born with the knowledge of how to play perfectly on their first try! Nor can they understand the notation system without practice and study. Music is a learned skill like any other discipline and I will use guitar as an example for this ‘like driving a car’ comparison.

When learning the guitar usually individual single notes are taught with proper finger position and technique. Chords are several notes puts together into a position, but usually changes are slower with a repetitive rhythm. Once you can do notes and chords (lead and accompaniment) is when you can start sounding more like playing a ‘piece’ instead of just a ‘part’. In addition for notes and chords, if you want to play a specific genre, for example classical, you would need to learn the notation and conventions of the genre. This is separate but connected to the actual notes and chords. Ear training and improvising are other important elements to playing music.

Once you can combine all these elements the music (or car) will move more smoothly and playing (driving) will become natural and automatic.
