I’m an experimenter! Activity Reflection

I chose to use padlet, infographic, and I completed the UDL challenge to build an activity to build community at our first class.

The infographic was easier than I thought and I created a terrific handout for posting in our blackboard. I think it will get the students attention better than my typical practice which is to post a word document. I struggle a bit with how much work we go to to engage students. I am old school for sure. But it was also fun and rewarding to create the handout as well.

We have used padlet on a few occasions already in this Empowered educator course, so I was not as intimidated byt it this time. I have learned I can push myself outside of my comfort zone. These modules have been challenging for me. But I feel like I am starting to get the hang of it. Now that my anxiety is a bit lower I actually find myself getting excited about the activities I have planned in this module for my spring course (which includes the padlet activity and the UDL challenge). And I will use the infographic in one of my winter courses.

In terms of using my smartphone or tablet,  I have to admit I struggled, and I ended up going back to the computer. I am so uncomfortable with not having a keyboard, and I like the big monitors I have at my desk. These are the advantages of my desktop – dissadvantage of tablet or phone is no keyboard, smaller screen. Absolutely, the portability of the tablet and smart phone is a huge advantage. In our program students are required to have a laptop that meets certain specifications. So when teaching face to face, almost 100% of the students have their laptops open in class. I am not sure there is an advantage to having them use a tablet or smartphone for most activities. However, phone or tablet for in class quizzes on Kahoots are essential for scanning the bar code for them to get in the game.

I actually found the video activity a both time consuming, stressful (again making me use technology I am not familiar with 😊 ). I appreciated the tips from OLT faculty development “This Time It’s Personal” video and the “Lights, Camera, Action!” on the site. I will adjust my approach incorporating some of the best practice tips.  I regularly create short videos in my courses either to highlight concepts, or to record ppt presentations, and I know my ppt presentaitons are too long.

We use Panopto for recording at my site. I don’t feel it’s necessary to learn another platform for recording. And to be honest I was a bit confused about whether or not I had to use one of the platforms mentioned. I don’t think I did so I have just gone ahead and used my phone camera. I hope this is ok. But this was also challenging. The video wouldn’t upload to my email to send to my computer. I tried to upload on Youtube from my phone but for the life of me could not find the plus sign so then I had to upload the file to my google drive – which I have to say I haven’t used for a few years. Then had to wait for it to upload. This activity was time consuming. (Hopefully everyone is not always whinging at you like I am….).

I already have several assignments in courses I teach which requires the students to record presentations, or in one they have to plan something interactive, and they have presented in person skits, but I have seen them also record debates, skits, etc. they can get very creative, which is really cool to see. I have an upcoming assignment due Nov 30 in a new course where students have to create a nursing education tool and part of the assignment grades go to how interactive the tool is for potential users, and they present this tool in a 5 slide ppt presentation that they have to record using Panopto.  I am excited to see what they come up with.
