It’s alive! It’s moving!
This solution was borne from a severe lack of attendance in my class this semester. This class is not part of the program I usually teach in, and is a post-graduate program with a high International student contingent.
There is a pilot program where international students no longer have a limit on how many hours they can work (I believe it is usually 20 hours/week) so many of the international students took full time or close to full time jobs, which interfere with their school schedule.
Instead of thinking of ways to force attendance, I implemented a virtual check-in scrum system where students can participate in a “meeting” on Brightspace. The grades are the same value, and in lieu of mandatory attendance, there is a mandatory deadline for posting.
The solution has been implemented already, and the first round of check-ins have started!
