Context: Students are not sure what to pay attention to in the required readings, believe they are covered in the lecture, have too much to do and thus don’t read them.

Technology-enabled solution: After polling two of my classes and having conversations about what would help the students engage with the reading materials, we concluded that a video of me explaining what is important that week and why would be beneficial, along with a handout to fill in. They referred to the handout as a scavenger hunt where they had to find the answers in the readings.  I chose to use Kaltura to explain how to determine what is important to read in the textbook that week.  The goal is to not only give students guidance on what to read this particular week, but also the skills to figure out on their own in the future what is important to cover. I chose to use a Google Doc for the handout as many students use google docs so this would easily work for them.  As I am a Microsoft user, I decided that using Google Docs for these would give me a bit more familiarity with the software. My goal is to create a video and a handout for each week for the online asynchronous class that I have. This also creates more instructor presence in the course.  I may also consider it for my other classes.
