In chemistry, the periodic table of the elements is a key resource that is used all of the time. Students seeing it for the first time are really intimidated by all of the information that it contains and sometimes have trouble figuring out where to find which type of information. I usually just walk them through how to apply the table to the exercises that they are working on. However, I am thinking that in the future having an activity where they concentrate solely on the information in the periodic table (like a scavenger hunt) would be beneficial before they have to use it in applied situations. I definitely think that this is a blind spot because, as an experienced science educator, you just automatically know that the periodic table is really useful, but it might not be obvious to new students.
