I have created a mind map of the elements of music using the free online tool Mindmup.com. I really like the fact that I can create a mind map and export it as an image or pdf file without having to download the application or sign up for an account. I enjoyed creating the mind map and I think this is an effective way of representing the vocabulary and subcategories within each section. I used colours to more easily identify the elements. I wished I could select multiple mind map bubbles at once while doing this because that would’ve saved a lot of time. Doing each bubble one by one seemed very tedious. Perhaps this is possible and I just need to use mindmup more or invest more time experimenting with the tools. In addition, some of the background colours were also too dark, but I resolved this issue by changing the text colour to white.

The elements of music are foundational to the learning experience of many first year music students and non-majors. In the musics and cultures course I TA-ed a few years ago, we covered half of the elements in the first term and the other half in the second term. This mind map is something that can be used throughout the course as a reference for the elements and the related vocabulary. By the exam, many students tend to mix up the elements when asked about them. They may know the meaning of the related vocabulary but forget which category it fits within. I can see this type of a mind map being a very helpful study tool when navigating through the elements of music and their associated vocabulary.
