The project I chose was the open mic I started in December 2020 in response to the lack of performance opportunities for musicians in the GTA because of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. I placed myself at the table, as well as the other participants in the open mic – whether it be performer or viewer. The individuals participating in the open open were mostly part of my discipline of music. My skills were similar to theirs, but we all have different strengths and weaknesses depending on our experience levels. Yes, they offer a diverse perspective as they are all coming from different backgrounds and sometimes employ different performance and practice techniques. This is an opportunity to all learn from each other.

The modes of communication tools I used to collaborate was primarily social media: Zoom, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. Facebook has been the most effective in communicating with the community of practice through the Facebook group and livestream. The open mic is hosted and streamed from Zoom and then after posted on YouTube. The least successful social media outlets for the open mic were Instagram and TikTok, but this may be because I did not use them as consistently as the others and they are not as crucial in running the open mic. In the future, I think it would also be useful to use email, perhaps in creating a newsletter or as an alternative mode of communication instead of primarily Facebook.
