This activity was difficult at the beginning. I found these online refractories confusing and I wasn’t sure what I was looking for or how to use them. My initial topic was music and analysis but after searching several of the referatories, I couldn’t find anything. I looked in the two main referatories OASIS and MOM, as well as discipline specific repositories, including Humanities (Harvard University) and Open Culture.

In the end, I chose to investigate further with the Open Culture website. I also changed my topic to Spanish and so looked under the ‘Languages’ tab. I then looked under the ‘Spanish’ section. There were several different types of resources there about learning the Spanish language. Duolingo is a Ap I already use and so am familiar with. It is an Ap for learning Spanish with a game-like model, so it asks you questions and you receive “lingots” as a reward which then can buy you extra hearts to play longer or other items. This is the most effective, long-term tool, in my opinion, because it has hundreds of levels which you build up to after completing the foundational levels.

There are many other resources I found which can help support learners’ understanding of the Spanish language. On YouTube, there is a channel called “Coffee Break Spanish – To G0”. This is a collection of short videos (1-5 minutes) which helps build Spanish comprehension by listening to real native speakers. On iTunes, I found a channel called “5 Minute-Spanish”, which is a free podcast which explains introductory Spanish grammar concepts. I was able to find all of these resources from Open Culture.
