This has been a well designed module. I have experience as a researcher, so for me, it has not been as valuable a learnignopportunity as the other modules have been.

I completed by PhD in 2016, and prior to that had some experience with SoTL research, including designing academic integrity online modules with a colleague, and having a group on one campus use traditional education on academic integrity, and students on the other campus (both in my program) complete the modules. Students in both groups did pre and post knowledge tests, and we tracked instances of academic misconduct. This reseasrch was presented at our annual nursing research symposium. I have had the experience and pleasure of publishing my research, and presenting it in posters and oral presentation, in local, national and international conferences. My most recent SoTL research was examining the impact of an OR consolidation placement. This also was conducted with a colleague, and we have been successful in having the findings published in the American Operating Room Nurses Journal, and presented at the NetNept 2022 conference in Sitges, Spain.

My research question for this project is:

Does transformational learning occur in international short term learning experiences for nursing students?

I plan to examine if the cross cultural nursing elective I will be teaching in the spring, and which includes experiential learning in Tanzania, meets the definition of transformational learning as defined by Mezirow (2003). I would like to interview students at intervals of 6 months post the course. Will ask for ethics approval and will have a neutral third party present the research to the students at the end of our last class and ask for participants. Interviews will be conducted by a neutral third party to eliminate response bias. Interviews will be conducted  within a few weeks of the course end date, then at 6 months, 1 year, 2 years and 3 years. I would also like to analyze reflective journals submitted as part of the course work. As part of the dissemination strategy, I will complete a literature review to be published, as well as present the results at our SLC annual nursing conference, and potentially publish the results in the Canadian Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

The image I have chosen shows the transformation leaves undergo throughout their lifespan, this shows both my transformation as a researcher, as well as depicts the transformation I am hopeful my students will experience through their experiences in the cross cultural nursing elective.
