Keys

  • I think one of the key differences and benefits of SoTL is how it encourages educators to define the learning process themselves and to dive into identifying their own inquiries vs. others. This allows you to focus on answering your specific questions relevant to your course and your students vs. reading other papers and applying their questions to your own practice.
  • The idea of using your class/course as an experiment makes a lot of sense to me as you really never know what will happen until you test it out on your students like an experiment would. The only way to improve one’s course/teaching methods is trial and error and reflecting on the outcomes.
  • Another important thing that I believe SoTL focuses on is the importance of inquiry. I think this is similar to the concept of being a lifelong learner where we’re always encouraged to ask questions, explore and find ways to improve our skills, courses and persons. By promoting inquiry, SoTL really pushes educators to always look forward on what’s next and how we can continue to improve our practices.
