This picture sums up my philosophy. I have been assigned courses that I had little to no background in (pathophysiology for example). It was overwhelming at first. I have been teaching long enough now to appreciate that I do not need to be the expert. I am responsible for guiding my students through the course material. How I teach is more important than the subjects I teach.
I provide a safe place to make mistakes, I give clear directions, I ensure all the information is provided in multiple formats, and tested in multiple ways, to support the various learning styles.
But most importantly I believe in supporting students. And this is what they remember from me. I do not do the work for them, but I am there and celebrate their successes, and support them when they are struggling. I am not afraid to say when I do not know the answer, and when this happens we work through the problem/question together. I love a healthy debate, and my students are comfortable to disagree with me. I truly believe it is the personal connection you make with your students that helps facilitate their learning no matter the difficulty of the subject matter.
