Who knew I was WIIFMing before it was cool! I regularly link real-life and the WIIFM question into the first year anatomy course I teach. It is mostly to motivate the students in the course, but I think it is a little for me to also remember that this is important content that needs a curator and guide to make it meaningful, especially when I find myself say “They don’t need me, they can learn it on their own.” I use this type of activity/content to make the course relevant to both myself and the students.
It is easy to scaffold the content to the WIIFM question with regards to future course content, but I also want them to realize the human connection with the content (you need to know this so you correctly prescribe exercises in the future of x populations) as well as the career trajectory it may take you in.
This year I interview 3 of my former students who are now in their careers or training for their future careers. Both my current students and grads appreciated these interviews where we discussed their career path and relevance to the course, the course content and connection to their work/careers and how it connected to their undergraduate degrees. Yay for WIIFM! Take a look at the interviews here (en français) : )
