My students honestly ask me this question all the time – why do I need to learn this concept, what’s in it for me? There is a wide variety of answers to something like this, and they’re dependent upon the person that’s asking. Sometimes it’s a personal sense of accomplishment that they’re after, sometimes they have a monetary goal because they’re looking for a promotion, sometimes they want to be able to just be faster at something. I’ve come up with a short list of possible reasons that my students may want to learn mathematics.
