This “What’s in it for me” activity is really crucial to get the students “on board” and for them to see what may really interest them throughout the semester.  I do like to throw the question out there to the students, like “Why should we really care about this material?”  In our credit courses in our university, we discuss the learning outcomes as teachers, but to be honest, we or I should discuss more WIIFM aspects of the course, so it motivates the students wherever they are on the scale of amotivated where a student isn’t motivated at all to intrinsic motivation (Ryan and Deci’s Self-Determination model) where we hope to be once the course starts and we are well into the syllabus.  Unfortunately, I feel my students in this institution and culture have an external motivation which are often moved by external factors such as reward systems, grades, evaluations, or the opinions they fear others might have of them. I do discuss with them even though it’s not a lot of fun to do so, but it needs to be pointed out when new skills/ projects are started.
