Writing good content/topic/module learning objectives may seem very straightforward for faculty with lots of practice, but there are several key things that novices would need to master:

  1. how learning objectives differ from a to-do list
    • frequently, novices will conflate the two
  2. Bloom’s taxonomy
    • a solid working knowledge of Bloom’s taxonomy and verb selection based on the level of your course is imperative
  3. relating learning objectives to learning outcomes
    • good learning objectives must relate to the overall course (or program) learning outcomes. If they don’t, why are you asking your students to meet that objective?
